Before
there was Borders...
before there was Barnes and Noble... before there was Amazon.com... there was Sisterhood Bookstore!
1351 Westwood Blvd
- Los Angeles, CA
Founders Adele Wallace, Simone Wallace, and Gahan Kelley opened Sisterhood Bookstore in 1972. From then until its closing in 1999, the store was an integral center for a community of and for women. To honor Los Angeles' most famous feminist bookstore, Adele Wallace, Simone Wallace, Emily Gold, Irene Wolt and Ronni Sanlo are documenting the story of this small, powerful place that had such a profound impact on women's lives. We intend to publish an anthology on the history of the bookstore. We hope you will participate. Through your words we will explore, from beginning to end, the life and loves of Sisterhood Bookstore. A call for voices... We invite you to send us your Sisterhood Bookstore recollections. How did Sisterhood Bookstore touch your life? We want to hear your stories, some of which will be selected for our book. We'd like to know your thoughts and feelings about:
If you visited the bookstore as customer or community member; read your work, performed your music, spoke about an experience there; worked at Sisterhood; or were connected to the store as a UCLA student, staff or faculty-member; please share with us your memories of those experiences. Check our guideline submissions before sending us your story. Or send a message to Simone and Adele.
Come back and visit us again. New items will be added to the Website, including updates on the book project. If you have photographs or historical articles that you would like to see on this site, please email them to us. |
